1930s House Extension and Loft Conversion in Newbury, Berkshire

A client in Newbury came to us with a classic 1930s detached house. While it had plenty of character, the layout no longer suited modern family life. The kitchen and living spaces felt disconnected, and the loft was unused potential.

Our brief was clear: create a home that feels more open, light-filled, and practical, while still respecting the 1930s architecture.

We designed a rear extension that opens the ground floor into a single flowing space — a kitchen, dining and living area with full-width glazing onto the garden and a large rooflight over the dining table to bring natural light deep into the plan.

Upstairs, we reimagined the loft to create a generous bedroom suite. By adding a large gable window with a glazed Juliet balcony, the new room feels open and calm, with views across the garden.

This project shows how thoughtful design can unlock the full potential of a period home, combining traditional character with modern living. The scheme is now ready to move forward into planning.
